CAFE BRIXTON

212 East Georgia Street, Vancouver

Tel: (604) 568-8200

Web: n/a

Twitter: n/a

Advice: Sit at the communal table or at the window.

Slightly secluded as it is off the beaten track of bustling Main Street in Chinatown/Strathcona, the café is well worth your discovery. First of all it is spacious and has that sort of NY feeling to it with its exposed brick walls, open 15 ft beam ceiling, distressed looking wooden tables and chairs. Secondly, there is a large communal table for sharing  while studying or working.

Carrot Cake

Espresso

I had the moist and tasty Carrot Cake ($2.95) with vanilla bean cream cheese icing and an Espresso ($2.75) made with 49th parallel coffee. The menu also includes baguette sandwiches, baked goods and beverages. They also offer an extensive brunch menu which I will get to trying one day soon.

CAFÉ FOR THE CONTEMPORARY ART

140 East Esplanade Avenue, North Vancouver

Tel: (778) 340-3379

Web: http://www.cafeforcontemporaryart.com/

Twitter: @cafca140

Advice: Check out their website for their events calendar.

Anytime I am on the North Shore I stop in for a visit to this wonderful café that has an art gallery inside the café. The idea for the art gallery is to showcase local artisans and to provide customers with an escape of sorts, to walk through the exhibits while sipping espressos and other café beverages. The café is beautiful, spacious and well-layed out and has baristas who are passionate about making great coffee.

Espresso

My beverage of choice here is an Espresso ($3) that is always served with a bite size cookie. You will find a complete beverage menu of coffees, tea, and juice along with sandwiches, scones, cookies, muffins and more.

A Quest for the Best Cinnamon Buns

Cinnamon Buns or Cinnamon Rolls are a staple snack at cafes and bakeries throughout North America, there are bakeries and cafes that boast their buns to be the best and there are chains that specialize in the one and only cinnamon goodness. I have spent a month sampling my away around Vancouver to find the BEST Cinnamon Bun or Roll.

Note: You may not agree with my opinion as my taste may not be your taste. Most of the buns and rolls are from independents with a few chains though I did steer clear from the national chains that only make cinnamon buns. The prices indicated include tax and were for one cinnamon bun/roll. I only visited places in Vancouver, I did not venture into the suburbs on this quest.

In ranking order, these are my favourite Cinnamon Buns and Rolls around Vancouver.

1) Grounds For Coffee 2565 Alma Street – $3.73

Gooey, big, the most perfect amount of cinnamon, thin layers of dough, topped with tasty white icing, delicious taste and the very best that I had.

GROUNDS FOR COFFEE

2) Cobs – Multiple locations – $2.80

Large, perfect amount of cinnamon, thin layers of dough, topped with tasty white icing, lots of layers of goodness.

COBBS

3) Crème de la Crumb – 466 Granville Street – $3.64

Small for the price, good amount of cinnamon, topped with the best vanilla bean white icing, tasty. The icing is what makes these buns so good.

CREME DE LA CRUMB

4) Solly’s –3 locations — $3.08

Good size, perfectly textured with layers of flakey dough, moist, full of cinnamon, tasty.

SOLLY`S

5) Bean Around The World –multiple locations — $2.70

Gooey, big, good amount of cinnamon , topped with white icing.

BEAN AROUND THE WORLD

6) Kaplan’s –5775 Oak Street — $3.08

Huge, yeasty texture dough that was a bit dry, lots of cinnamon and lots of raisins.

KAPLAN`S

7) Whole Foods Cambie – 510 West 8th Avenue

Gigantic, full of rains, dense, topped with honeyed pecans.

WHOLE FOODS

8) Melriches –1244 Davie Street — $2.91

Big, dry bun, not a great tasting dough, right amount of cinnamon, with few raisins.

KAFKA’S COFFEE & TEA

2525 Main Street, Vancouver

Tel: 604-569-2967

Twitter: @kafkascoffeetea

Advice: Free wifi (ask for the code)

This is my new go to cafe, serving great coffee from Herkimer, tea from Barnes & Watson, in an awesome space that is decorated by unique art adorning the walls. You could say that I am in love with this cafe, I do love the communal table in the center of the cafe as well as the black couches near the front and the cool truck lighting hanging near the sliding windows.

Espresso Macchiato

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Icing Sandwich

I have had a few of the items here including a perfectly prepared Espresso Macchiato ($3), a Sumatra Pour Over Coffee ($2.25), a Brownie ($2.25) and the outstandingly delicious and addicting Pumpkin Cream Cheese Icing Sandwich ($3). The menu is pretty simple, espresso beverages, pour over coffee, tea, and baked goods which includes brownies, scones and muffins. I am hooked on the moist, gooey, chocolatey brownies and you will be too!

SAVARY ISLAND

1533 Marine Drive, West Vancouver

Tel: Tel: 604-926-4021

Web: n/a

Advice: Come hungry, if the place is full it is worth waiting for a seat.

Pies

They have one of the best Grilled Cheese Sandwiches in the city, moreover one of the best pies selections too. Anytime I find myself in the neighborhood, I’ve dropped by for a visit to admire the pies, have a coffee and read the paper. This bustling bakery/café is always full of people eating great sandwiches, sipping lattes or indulging in slices of pie. They bake their own breads, and several different types of pies daily.

Grilled Cheese

Lemon Buttermilk Berry Pie

On my last visit I had the Grilled Cheese ($9.50) on their Italian bread with cheese, tomatoes and onions, crispy and grilled to perfection. I also had a slice of their Lemon Buttermilk Berry Pie ($4.95). They have a good selection of other sandwiches that can be grilled or not, soups, salads and a whole range of baked goods including the most delicious pies. There at least 10 different types of pies made fresh daily, by the slice or by the pie. For an extra $1.50 you can add a scoop of ice cream to your pie. Have a latte or a cup of tea, find a seat, read a newspaper and enjoy.
