Phillips Brewery Dinner in the Cellar

On Monday May 30th I attended the Phillips Brewery Dinner as part of The Salt Cellar series at Salt Tasting Room. Johnny from Phillips Brewery introduced the line-up.

The long communal table filled with about 40 guests along with an overflow table to accommodate another 10 guests  had the opportunity to discover the delicious brews that hail from Vancouver Island’s brewery as we paired the beer with artisanal cheeses and local charcuterie.

Round 1 Beer pairing

Round 1 –we tasted these 3 beers:

Phillips – Ginger Beer, Wheat King, Hefeweizen , Slipstream Cream Ale

Round 2 Beer pairing

Round 2 – we tasted these 3 beers:

Phillips Brewery Ginger Beer also well paired with Local Chevre and apples

Love Chocolate, love the Phillips Longboat Chocolate Porter paired with St Agur cheese and Fig & Walnut Bread

Cocktail Kitchen with Driftwood Beer at The Refinery

On May 11th I attended my first ever Cocktail Kitchen and for this one it was with a twist, this one was with Driftwood Beer mixed into a variety of cocktails. I had no idea what to expect, though I had heard many stories from friends about the various Cocktail Kitchen’s they attended at The Refinery in the past.

The format of the Cocktail Kitchen Series is that each month features a food theme and a spirit. For May, there was a Thai vegetarian menu designed by The Refinery’s Ben de Champlain that was up against Driftwood Brewery beer. The competing bartender had to create original cocktails to pair with each of the three dishes, using the featured beverage and one of The Refinery’s house bitters. Guests then rated the cocktails, the taste of their food pairings, and the bartender’s presentation.

Lauren Mote & Ben de Champlain of The Refinery were the hosts of the night.

Here is what Lauren and Ben of The Refinery served guests:

Driftwood Ale Amuse Cocktail

The Malteser - with Driftwood White Bark ale, ovaltine and bourbon

Thai Soup with coconut, mushrooms, galangai, chili and herbs

Pineapple Express with Driftwood Batog IPA, vodka, grapefruit bitters, lemongrass lemon drop

Thai Salad - mango, papaya, mint, coriander and citrus

Bark has Bite - with Driftwood Farmhand Ale, homemade root beer

Mussaman Curry - peanuts, pineapple, potato, longan, herbs

PIVO PUBLIC HOUSE

526 Abbott Street, Vancouver
Tel: 604-608-0500

Advice: Located at Tinseltown, close to GM Place and BC Place. If you are having any of the three Poutine dishes share with your friends.

Onion Rings

Italian Poutine

If you are looking for a place to get some food and drink before or after a game or for an after-work get together, then a visit to nearby Pivo is well worth it! I had lunch there with a couple of friends who shared my starters with me as there was no way I was going to be able to eat all of the rings and poutine on my own. To begin, we had the huge Onion Rings ($5) thick cut onion rings, coated with a crispy buttermilk batter served with paprika aioli or mustard on the side. Then the large bowl of hearty Italian Poutine ($8) Kennebec fries, fresh tomato and garlic sauce, basil and mozzarella.

Aged Cheddar Perogies

Blackened White Fish Sandwich

Then the large bowl of hearty Italian Poutine ($8) Kennebec fries, fresh tomato and garlic sauce, basil and mozzarella. I then enjoyed the Blackened White Fish Sandwich ($13) fresh baguette, lemon mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, crispy capers and a side of salad; while my friend had the Aged Cheddar Perogies ($8) pan-fried with pancetta and onions.

Banana Bread and Chocolate Pudding

For dessert we all shared the Banana Bread and Chocolate Pudding ($6) baked banana bread, chocolate and spices, served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. They have a stellar beer list including top notch local and international beers on tap as well as by the bottle, wine and cocktails round out the liquid refreshments. I love the modern room with the comfortable seating and the big screen for watching the sporting events!
