Advice: The Brioche bun is one of the attractions. Good place to go with a friend so you can share dishes.

There is a burger and then there is a burger! Stackhouse takes it up a notch and has some of the best burgers around. My friend Cassandra Anderton and I had lunch together in this stylish room with a magnetic steel mural above the open kitchen along with big bulb hanging lamps and pointed butcher knives pointing high up towards the ceiling.

Stackhouse Burger

Chicken Burger

Onion Rings

Deep Fried Pickles

We shared the outstanding Stackhouse Burger ($15) 6.5 oz local prime rib patty with pancetta, portabellini, Guinness cheddar, chipotle aioli and butter lettuce served on a brioche bun with fries and the outstanding Chicken Burger ($15) 5 oz free-run chicken breast with Camembert cheese, truffle aioli and butter lettuce, served on a brioche bun served with a salad. We also shared an order of Onion Rings ($7) made daily in house, battered & breaded, served with your choice of aioli, and we shared an order of Deep Fried Pickles ($7) different type of dish, unique and quite tasty. The best aioli dipping sauce from the choices on offer is the Truffle by far.

Deep fried Ice Cream

They have one dessert creation on the menu which we both shared, a delicious Deep fried Ice Cream ($9) Vanilla ice cream wrapped in brioche dough, deep fried to perfection, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and served with a Kahlua chocolate ganache and fresh fruit. You’ll also find a selection of other burgers such as the Kobe Beef Burger, Lamb Burger, Dungeness Crab Burger and more along with salads and sliders. The bar is set-up towards the front and has beer, wine, cocktails and an extensive selection of Bourbons on offer.

I’m looking forward to my return visit to try the Kobe Beef Burger.

Advice: Share one of their BarbQ platters if you dine with friends so that you can try all of their BarbQ. They specialize in Kansas City style of BarbQ.

Poutine

Mammoth Platter

Cornbread, Yam Fries, Potato Wedges, Coleslaw, Baked Beans

I have always loved BarbQ especially when travelling in the Southern USA, I recently dined with my friend Julie Ovenell-Carter who is a travel writer and one who loves good BarbQ as well. We were both impressed by their Craft Beer list and our server Joana who was well versed in the beer on hand and which beer would be best with their dishes. at the Hog Shack. We took our servers lead, Julie had the Immortal IPA (India Pale Ale) from Seattle’s Elysian Brewing and I had the Tree Brewing Cut Throat Pale Ale. We then shared an order of their Poutine ($7) hand cut potato fries, cheese curds and gravy, and then it was time to dig in to our sharing feast. All eyes were on the table when our Mammoth Platter ($45.50 serves two) arrived featuring a selection of their Dinosaur Beef Bones, Smoked Beef Brisket, Baby Back Ribs, St. Louise Side Ribs, Pulled Pork and Chicken Legs that was served with a selection of sides which included their delicious house made corn bread, yam fries, potato wedges, coleslaw and baked beans. They have a vast menu of all sorts of dishes such as Tacos, Schnitzels, Sandwiches, Burgers, Pasta, Salads and Seafood, however BarbQ is the focus and that is what you should order.

ROMER’S BURGERS

1873 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver

Tel: 604-732-9545

Web: http://romersburgerbar.com/

Twitter: @romersburger

Advice: Share the fries with a friend as the portion is large.

These aren’t just any burgers, this is burger heaven. I had heard that Romer’s had some amazing burgers and since I had recently judged the Yaletown Burger Competition, I had to check out the new burger joint in Kitsilano. The star attraction here is the burgers, from the All-Natural Heritage Farms range fed Angus Beef to the Turkey, Free-run Chicken, or Wild Salmon.

Man's Man Burger

Fresh-Cut Fries with truffle oil and regianno

I had the Man’s Man Burger ($11) All-natural beef, local creamery amber ale cheddar, onion strings, smoked alder salts and slice tomatoes. My friend Carlos had the Standard Burger with cheddar cheese ($10.50) all-natural beef, vine-ripened tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, and R sauce. We both shared a basket of the Fresh-Cut Fries ($7) with truffle oil and regianno. Asides from the tasty burger it is the bun that really won us over, each burger is served on a lightly griddled brioche bun. You can ‘Pimp Your Burger’ by adding savouries, marvelous mustards, different types of cheeses and more. There is a variety of starters including Poutine, a variety of French Fry offerings, fresh Salads and a couple of great looking desserts. The beer menu is about as impressive as the burger line-up and paired well if you choose to go that route. I’m looking forward to my return visit to try the So Cal Turkey Burger.

Nimby Burger Opening

Milkshakes

Last night was the opening party for Nimby Burger in Kitsilano, a late night party outside on the deck across from Kits beach. This new burger joint is a take out spot that has burgers, fries and milkshakes.

Fries

My favourites were the Cheeseburgers, Chocolate and Vanilla Milkshakes.

Nimby Burger is now open at 2210 Cornwall Avenue in Kitsilano.

Advice: closed Friday night and Saturday (they open after sundown on Saturday). Serving lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. Reservations are a good idea.

Ima's Hummus

Turkei Schnitzel

Pesto Chicken Breast

My friend Alejandro and I had dinner here recently, he often joins me when there is a new Mexican restaurant in the city, this time it was his first time to eat in a Kosher restaurant. I have eaten in many Kosher restaurants around the world and too often they aren’t focused on gourmet cuisine, at the Maple Grill I was pleasantly surprised. To begin our meal and our Kosher gourmet journey, we shared Ima’s Hummus ($6.50) – topped with chickpeas, toasted sesame seeds, olive oil and served with brown pita bread. For our main plate entrees, I had the deliciously large Turkei Schnitzel ($22) -breaded and pan seared, topped with pea shoots dressed in an herb vinaigrette with toasted pine nuts, accompanied by two sides, of the eight sides to choose I had the Roasted Rosemary Potatoes and the Grilled white asparagus and red pepper; Alejandro had the Pesto Chicken Breast ($23) – tender chicken stuffed with house-made basil pesto and for his two sides he had the Saffron Risotto and Roasted Rosemary Potatoes. The menu offers a good selection of Appetizers, Soups and Salads from some traditional favourites including Matzo Ball Soup to inventive salads such as The Black Hat Salad. Their are Casual Plates which are mostly burgers such as the Moroccan Burger and Ocean Burger where you can substitute the accompanying fries with onion rings, soup or side salad upon request. Then their are the Main Plates which offers a varied selection of entrees such as a 10 oz Rib-eye Steak for $32 which is the most expensive item on the menu. All the Main Plates come with your choice of two sides and you can ask for seconds or thirds of the tasty sides too.

Apple Strudel topped with Soy Ice Cream

We were both quite full after our dinner, however that wasn’t going to stop us in trying at least one of the desserts. We shared the Apple Strudel ($6.50) – round pastry filled with apples and cinnamon topped with a scoop of their home-made soy ice cream ($1 extra). The dessert was unbelievably good and after I found out who the pastry chef was, I was tempted to order another, next time I will have my own dessert!

This west coast Kosher kitchen is inventive and the dishes are flavourful. The decor is elegant with black walls and hard wood flooring, the seating is very comfortable. Our server was welcoming and offered guidance with the menu selection. The bar menu offers Kosher wines along with an extensive selection of beers on tap.

Advice: add extra fixins as you so desire, several choices on the menu.

Ground Turkey Burger

Ground Turkey Burger

I am so happy that I made a visit to this long time burger emporium in Kitsilano after friends have nudged, pushed, and talked about Moderne. The menu is fairly simple, they have 4 different burgers, Steak, Ground Turkey, Veggie and Salmon filet and they come with or without fries, all include the basics being hand-leafed lettuce, tomato, onions, mayonnaise and house sauce. The burgers are made fresh daily with no preservatives, season or fillers. The potatoes are farm fresh, and the fries are hand cut to order. I had the Ground Turkey Burger ($7.45) which was delicious and fresh, very good and very different than others I have had previously. Beverages include old fashioned sodas, floats and shakes that are hand-made with hard ice cream. This is an old style 1950’s burger emporium that is Moderne.

SPLITZ GRILL

Splitz2

Web: http://www.splitzgrill.com

Advice: Remember to tell them if you want the burgers by themselves or the combos.

Splitz3

This is the place for burgers in the city, these aren’t ordinary burgers either. Try the Chicken burger ($8.50)with sautéed onions (extra $1 option) and then choose from any of the many toppings available at the toppings bar, such as honey mustard, splitz sauce, lettuce, tomato, humous, or any of the other toppings. You may also want to try one of my other favourites which include the Wild Salmon Burger ($9.50) and add any of the fixins. In addition to the many burgers others include the lamb sausage, beef and vegi lentil, you can add a side of fries ($3.25) or onion rings ($). Then if you have any room left go for one of their thick milkshakes or huge sundaes.
