NOTTURNO PANINOTECA

Advice: The locale could easily be missed, go and find it.

I felt like I was back in Italy having lunch at the home of a friend who was serving up simple grilled Panini with quality ingredients, yet I was in Gastown about to enjoy the same! The narrow room was nicely decorated with pictures on the wall, an open kitchen to see the chef making the Panini in front of me, chandeliers, black top tables and seating to enjoy the sandwiches and small plates with friends.

Blu Fico Panini

I had the Blu Fico ($9.50) which became my own version as I substituted the blue cheese for taleggio cheese and figs that was served with a side salad. There is a good selection of panini, as well as salads if you care to go gluten-free without the bread.

Very soon you will be able to stop in at night for a glass of wine or beer to go along with a Panini or share plates.

Advice: Bring a friend or two along to share one of their fondues.

Grilled Cheese

Pommes Frites

I’ve got this Parisian feeling each time I step inside this eastside gem that appears a bit out of the way. This is a cheese lover’s dream, a wine bar and a restaurant that specializes in cheese and charcuterie. Love their Grilled cheese $8 made with their special cheesy mixture that they use in their Mac & Cheese, it was a secret blend I was told that is served with a side of quince paste (this is a sandwich you have to ask for as it is not featured on their printed menus). I shared the Pommes Frites ($5) with mayonaisse for dipping with a friend.

Espresso

Grand Marnier Creme Brulee

Ending a meal on tasteful note is as important as the beginning of the meal, loved the Espresso ($2.25) along with the Grand Marnier Creme Brulee ($7). Well known for their wine choices theirs is mainly a European list, with good selections from Germany, France, Portugal, and Spain. Many of the wines are available by the glass and this is a great place to try a wine and cheese pairing as the cheese selection is vast. The menu also features French favourites including raclette, croque monsieur, croquet madame, mac and cheese and fondues.

Advice: Best to share the different platters and items with a friend or two. Use a google map or gps to find them.

Spinach Salad

Global Cheese Platter

From the moment I entered I was breathless, the room was inviting and the place which is hidden away off the beaten path works so well. The server was ever so charming and engaging, explaining the menu in detail and the various dishes on the menu as well as the specials on the large chalk board. The menu is fairly simple though there were many choices for the cheese and meat platters. Started off with the Salad ($8) spinach, pomegranate and sopressta which was not only refreshing but delicious, then shared the Global Cheese platter ($21) with 3 cheeses accompanied with apple slices, grapes, nuts, quince paste and jelly along with bread slices and crisps.

Orange Tart

For dessert shared the Orange Tart ($6) just like a lemon tart, it is an orange tart, very unique and light. With a glass of the Domaine Jean Bousquet Malbec ’07 ($8) this all paired well. Impressive wine list that includes a great selection of whites, reds and rose along with a nice beer list, goes along well with the delightful food offerings. This gem is worth discovering and I look forward to returning to try their fondue and weekend brunch.

Advice: Look up Google maps to find the location.

Living in Vancouver all my life, I thought that I knew where everything was until I tried to locate Salt Tasting Room, after stopping to ask a couple of people in the Gastown area, I finally found the destination that I was searching. Enter Salt, a cool, out of the way, charcuterie, wine bar, and chill space in Blood Alley. I was by for lunch and had the Grilled Cheese ($12) which came with a fennel salad and black bean soup. This grilled cheese was like none other that I have ever had, a selection of artisan cheeses, Guinness grainy mustard and some other secret sauce and grilled to perfection, my tastebuds went wild. Salt

The space is exposed brick and concrete floors, and adorned with steel designer stools, an 18-foot-long communal table, simple hanging lighting, and heavy wood tables. Being located in historic Gastown, the feel of this room fits in well in the neighborhood.

It is charcuterie and wine bar that is a destination in the city, Salt Tasting Room has a great artisanal cheese selection, thin sheets of cured meats and an array of condiments. You simply create your own tasting plate by choosing three items from the daily blackboard. For $15, your little meal – chosen from a rotating roundup of specialty meats and artisan cheeses – is full of condiments. There is an extensive wine list with wines by the glass or bottle.
