Summer Splash at Goldfish Yaletown

Crab Salad Cones

On June 22nd, for the second time, I attended one of the best parties of the season held at Goldfish Kitchen in Yaletown. This was the 2nd Annual Summer Splash an event that raised over $50,000 to support the Vancouver Native Health Society.

Thai Chicken Flatbread

Fried Risotto Balls

Guests were treated throughout the night to cocktails , lots of red and white wine samples from Duckhorn Wines and martinis along with tasty small bites by Chef Scott Pratico. My favourites included the Thai Chicken Flatbread, Pulled Pork Steam Buns, Crab Salad Cones, Fried Risotto Balls, Chocolate Covered Triple Sec stuffed Strawberries and the Peanut Butter Cookie Sandwiches filled with strawberry pannacota.

Doreen Littlejohn, Nurse Coordinator of The Positive Outlook Clinic at VNHS commented: “This is the second year Goldfish Pacific Kitchen’s Summer Splash event has raised a significant sum of money for our organization.  Last year we were able to install two brand new kitchens – this year the money means we will be able to provide even more of the services that are so vital to the 150 people who come through our door each day.”

The evening included a bikini fashion show by acclaimed designer Anna Kosturova featuring her beautiful and revealing bikini and swimwear designs and with the support of Sports Illustrated itself, guests were able to leave with a copy of this year’s Swimsuit Edition. A salsa dance performance kept guests entertained – and the live auction featured items such as a specially commissioned painting by Tiko Kerr and a dinner at the Kanke’s water front residence, catered by Goldfish corporate Chef Pratico and hosted by Global BC News anchor Chris Gailus.

Goldfish Pacific Kitchen heats up for charity swimwear event, Summer Splash

Third Annual Fundraiser to benefit the Vancouver Native Health Society

The weather this year might have had you thinking summer would never arrive – but that couldn’t be further from the truth at Yaletown’s Goldfish Pacific Kitchen.  The venue is again hosting their annual Summer Splash event, on Wed, June 22, 2011 from 7 to 9:30pm. This summer beach fashion and cocktail event will benefit the Vancouver Native Health Society (VNHS), a non-profit organization doing much needed work in the Downtown Eastside.

This is one of my favourite events of the year, see my coverage of last years event.

Artist, Tiko Kerr, has donated a canvas painting valued at $6,500 for the event’s live auction; as well, attendees can bid on a coveted chance to dine one-on-one with Mr. and Mrs. Kanke to find out what it is that makes them some of the most successful business owners in Vancouver’s restaurant scene.

Summer Splash features all the necessary trappings for a great summer evening – light refreshments in the form of wine, beer and martinis, delectable appetizers prepared by Executive Chef Curtis Webb of Goldfish Pacific Kitchen, DJ Leanne, professional salsa performances, and the latest trends in swimwear from local designer Anna Kosturova.

“Summer Splash has made its mark on the Vancouver social calendar and it’s a great event that gets everyone talking,” explains Andrea Mestrovic, Goldfish Director of Marketing & Sales. “But we do this for one reason only – to raise funds for the Vancouver Native Health Society.  We hope to keep growing each year, raising the bar and the donations every time.”

Tickets are $75. For more information, please visit www.goldfishkitchen.com, or call 604-689-8318.

New Dishes Tasting at Goldfish

Yesterday I attended a media tasting at Goldfish Pacific Kitchen to try some of their new menu creations, 90% of the menu is new and this came about due to a new chefs team at the helm. These guys are far from new, both are experienced chefs who were previously in the kitchen at Joe Fortes and many other fine restaurants around the world. This menu is creative and vibrant and it is obvious that Chef Curtis Webb & Chef Ryan Mah know how to create dishes with bold and unique flavours with a little fun thrown in to the mix.

Here are some of my favourites from the tasting.

Cheeseburger Spring Rolls

Tuna Poke

Jumbo Tiger Prawns

Miso Sablefish

King Crab Tempura

Chef Ryan Mah and the Kurobuta Pork Buns

Lime Kafir Panna Cotta & Cheesecake

Note: The dishes that I tasted were tasting size not regular size as you would order from the menu.

A Night of Don Julio Tequila

Making the Spanish Raindrop - Anejo

Making the Spanish Raindrop - Anejo

The Don Julio ‘Height of Craftmanship’ event hosted by Goldfish Pacific Kitchen in Yaletown on November 16 was a great success and a lot of fun. There were stations scattered about the room which offered up Luxury Drops of 3 signature tequilas Blanco, Repasado and Anejo along with the bar featuring a couple of cocktails made with the Don Julio Tequilas. Goldfish chefs had a spectacular set-up of delicious seafood, duck, beef appetizers to pair up with the Tequilas of choice.

I had the opportunity to meet Brian Van Flandern who is the Global Ambassador for Don Julio. World renowned Michelin Three-star mixologist Brian Van Flandern has been a professional bartender in New York City for over 18 years. In 2004 Brian helped open Chef Thomas Keller’s now famous restaurant PER SE as the head mixologist. Applying Chef Keller’s philosophy of flavor profiling to cocktails taught Brian to create well-balanced food friendly cocktails. His recreation of the classic Gin and Tonic (he makes his own tonic water with quinine powder imported from Brazil) has garnered national attention. In 2008 Tanqueray Ten Gin named Brian one of the top ten bartenders in the world and was hired as Diageo’s first ever Global Tequila Ambassador. And in 2009 Travel and Leisure Magazine named Brian one the Top Ten Hotel Bartenders in the World.

A group of us had the opportunity to hear Brian tell us about the company and the Tequilas that are produced, we were able to taste the 1942 which as a bottle would sell for about $144 CAD. Don Julio established the first tequila distillery in 1942 and to commemorate that very special year, they have created Don Julio 1942 a unique and limited edition. Its golden line and perfect clarity is appealing and a testament to its purity. The aroma is sweet and ripe with layers of agave and notes of ripe apple and oak. The taste is smooth, rich and clean with oak and vanilla finish. Don Julio 1942 will appeal to both connoisseurs and collectors of fine tequila.
