Culinary Treats at the Olympics House of Switzerland

Chef Louke & Chef Beda

I met Chef Beda Zengg yesterday at House of Switzerland where he cooked up some of his culinary delights from Switzerland for me to taste. We are fortunate to have some fine Swiss Chefs in Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics and the House of Switzerland is the place to go to eat and drink. I’ve travelled to Switzerland long ago and I was yearning to try some of their dishes here in Vancouver.

Grisons Cold Cuts with Cheese and Pickles

Cheese Shaving Wheel

To start off my Swiss meal, I was served a plate of their Grisons Cold Cuts with Cheese and Pickles I was curious about the cheese swirl in the middle of the plate and how that was done, Chef Beda explained that this special cheese which is from Switzerland is sliced on a special cheese slicer (you can purchase the cheese slicer at Les Amis du Fromage in Vancouver).

Sourdough Bread Cubes

Swiss Cheese Fondue

The next dish was the Swiss Cheese Fondue, this arrived in a pot to my table with a basket of sourdough bread cubes and the special fondue forks for dipping and swirling. I was served a cup of hot peppermint tea as a hot beverage is best for digestion when eating a fondue. You may also drink a glass of white wine or Kirsch with your fondue.

Lindt Chocolate Creations

To end my meal, I had the Lindt Chocolate Creations it is a plate of 3 individual desserts a white chocolate frozen parfait, two colour chocolate mousse and a chocolate cake with passion fruit filling. This was served with a Nespresso shot of Espresso which was a fine ending to my Swiss meal.

The House of Switzerland at Bridges Restaurant and Bistro is serving Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner now thru the end of the Olympics, their complete menu with the Swiss menu selections can be seen here http://www.bridgesrestaurant.com/menus and you can make a reservation by calling them at 604-687-4400.

House of Switzerland Opening at the Olympics

This afternoon I attended the grand opening of House of Switzerland for the 2010 Winter Olympics on Granville Island in Vancouver. The House of Switzerland is the official Swiss guest centre at the Olympic Games. It has been set-up and outfitted for the Olympic Games, and is now open for the duration of the Games.

Swiss Music Procession

The Alphorn-Players from St. Moritz played Swiss music and people were having fun! A selection of Swiss food specialties were served to the Media and VIP invited guests upstairs while hundreds of locals and visitors packed the downstairs for this great opening party.

Raclette Appetizers

Chef from Switzerland & Switzerland House Manager

The tradition of a Swiss guest centre dates back to 1998, when the House of Switzerland celebrated its inaugural event at the Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. The House of Switzerland is project managed by Presence Switzerland, part of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and acts as a meeting point and social hub for the Swiss Olympic team, its sponsors, and partners. It is also used for receptions, media conferences, client events, and medal celebrations.  It is one of the few national guest centres at the Olympic Games open to the public, and is intended for a wide local and international audience. The House of Switzerland was conceived as a public-private partnership project and is designed to facilitate close collaboration between official partners and sponsors from the Swiss private sector.

Many events will be held here over the next few weeks including breakfast, lunch and dinner available in the restaurant. Come down for a visit and enjoy some of their Swiss Hospitality and food and drink specialties.

House of Switzerland at the Olympic Games in Vancouver

The XXI Winter Olympic Games will take place from 12 – 28 February 2010 in Canada’s Vancouver and Whistler. The House of Switzerland will be represented twice this time. The unique Swiss guest centres will be set up in the heart of both of the sporting venues: Vancouver and Whistler.

The House of Switzerland Canada 2010 will open its doors in both cities a full week before the Olympic Games get underway – on 5 February 2010 – so as to make its mark as a key Olympic hotspot during the lead up to the Games themselves. At both locations, the House of Switzerland Canada 2010 will be integrated into a successful and attractive pre-existing restaurant venue.

Look for some great events featuring Swiss Chefs from Switzerland, Swiss delicacies, cheese from Switzerland, Nespresso Coffee samples, Lindt’s Gourmet Festival, and much more.
