Blueberry Milkshake

Strawberry Milkshake

Blueberry Shortcake

As part of my Field Trip to Krause Daily Farms, my friend Nikki Caine and I had a wonderful lunch on the farm during our visit. We sat on the outside patio overlooking the children’s playground and orchard on this spectacular sunny day. I had a slice of delicious house-made roasted Corn Pizza ($3.99) that was topped with their own yellow corn, artichokes, assorted bell peppers, and cheese; as well as a Blueberry Milk Shake ($3.99), Nikki also had a slice of the Corn Pizza as well as a Strawberry Milk Shake ($3.99). For dessert we shared the tasty Blueberry Shortcake with vanilla soft ice cream, their version of a Shortcake is a sweet biscuit and fresh berries. You will also find other in beverages including Berry Lemonade, Smoothies and Shakes; as well as home-made desserts that include their Fruit Pies, Shortcakes, and more!

NIMBY BURGER

2210 Cornwall Avenue, Vancouver

Tel: 604-734-3589

Twitter: @NimbyBurger

Advice: no seats, take-out only.

Hamburger (left) & Cheeseburger (right)

Fries

The space is small and the line is often long. You know the food is always good when there is a line-up, when I first heard of Nimby I didn’t understand the concept, after tasting my first Nimby burger I was in burger heaven. For the price these burgers hit the spot, they aren’t gourmet pile it on burgers like some places, these are basic flavorful burgers at a great price. This burger stand sells burgers, fries and milkshakes and that is it! I have had the Cheeseburgers ($3.99), Hamburger ($2.99), French Fries ($2.99) and Milkshakes ($3.25) the chocolate shake is my favourite. Each burger is topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle.

Large and spacious, café with high ceilings, large windows around the café with lots of wood as part of the décor. You will find photos for sale that adorn the walls, free wifi, bench seating, pillows, stool seating by the windows.

Espresso Macchiato

Raspberry Cream Cheese Croissant

There are sandwiches, all sorts of baked goods including croissants, muffins and cookies from Calabria bakery. There are smoothies, milkshakes, teas, cold beverages and Lavazza coffees. I had a Raspberry Cream Cheese Croissant ($2.25) and a Espresso Macchiato ($1.85)   Loved the ambience and the great space to work on my laptop writing this review. Coming back soon!

Wild Salmon Rice Bowl

Nutty Gypsy

I’ve been coming here ever since they opened this eastside location where I love the ambience and the food. The dining room if you could call it that isn’t anything like you have seen around the city, I can’t really call it cozy but it is very unique. The wooden seats are covered with afghan rugs and the tables are made of wooden logs and the incense burns from afar. Most nights there is live music with musicians on the sitar and other eastern instruments which adds to the pleasure of dining here. I have had most of the Eastern Roti Rolls on the menu, on my most recent visit I had the delicious Wild Salmon Rice Bowl ($8.50) baked miso salmon in coconut milk, lime leaves and red/green thai curry. Also for my beverage I had one of their amazing milkshakes, the Nutty Gypsy ($4.50) made with soy milk and frozen yogurt, mixed nuts, cardamom, cinnamon, and chocolate. I am also a fan of their Turkish Chill and Himalyan High milkshakes.

Advice: Sit anywhere you feel like sitting.

Wholewheat French toast

Pan Fried Potatoes

This is one of those long time places that has become an institution in the city, since 1948, Bert’s has been serving breakfasts to loyal customers who know good food and value. Their large collection of bobbleheads and of famous people too sits above the front counter drawing customers with their cameras in hand. Love the counter for solo dining, lots of seating throughout the restaurant. I was there for breakfast and had 2 slices of Wholewheat French toast ($5.50) along with a side of Pan Fried Potatoes ($3.25). One of my friends eats there regularly 2-3 times a week for breakfast, he always orders something different to make his visit memorable. This restaurant has been serving customers for over the past 60 years because the service is ever so friendly and people can drop in and sit anywhere they would like. Asides from the extensive selection on the breakfast menu they also serve a wide variety of items on their lunch and dinner menus including hot and cold sandwiches, salads, gourmet burgers, pastas, chicken, greek dishes, steaks and seafood. Make sure you leave some room for dessert or one of their popular milkshakes after your lunch or dinner.

Ground Turkey Burger

Ground Turkey Burger

I am so happy that I made a visit to this long time burger emporium in Kitsilano after friends have nudged, pushed, and talked about Moderne. The menu is fairly simple, they have 4 different burgers, Steak, Ground Turkey, Veggie and Salmon filet and they come with or without fries, all include the basics being hand-leafed lettuce, tomato, onions, mayonnaise and house sauce. The burgers are made fresh daily with no preservatives, season or fillers. The potatoes are farm fresh, and the fries are hand cut to order. I had the Ground Turkey Burger ($7.45) which was delicious and fresh, very good and very different than others I have had previously. Beverages include old fashioned sodas, floats and shakes that are hand-made with hard ice cream. This is an old style 1950’s burger emporium that is Moderne.
