Tuna Ta Taco

Who wants Tacos ? These days finding a taco at a food cart is seeming-less, there are tacos and then there are tacos! The menu focus is Californian Baja-style cooking using fresh local and organic products when available. I have had their Fish Taco which was outstanding, and more recently I had their Tuna Ta Taco ($6.50) an almost rare ahi tuna taco with seaweed and mango which was heavenly. Their menu includes Baja-style tacos, burritos, tortilla soup and more.

I had no idea who they were before arriving on the Vancouver streets, they have quite the following by people who had visited them at their birthplace in Tofino. Now you don’t have to go far to enjoy one of their taco favourites, you just have to find them. The truck is mobile in more ways than one as they do move around day by day, you cant miss the vibrant amber truck once you find it as it is brightly painted with Virgin de Guadalupe!

You have heard of Tex Mex, now there is Korean Mex, yes you heard me right, here at Coma Korea meets Mexico as flavours merge and tantalize your tastebuds. There are a few different offerings on the menu which mixes up Korean ingredients with Mexican flavours and known dishes. I had the tasty Korean style BBQ Burrito ($5.99) filled with cheese, vegetables, corns, tofu, Korean sweet and spicy beef wrapped as a burrito. You will also find Korean Nuggets, a Korean style sweet and spicy chicken dish; Stuffed Seaweed Rolls and more, next time I am going to have the Kimchi Quesadilla!

Tacos

I have always loved tacos, although it took me awhile, I finally scouted out Cartel Taco to have their Korean fusion style tacos. Most of the time you will find this street cart parked on the street in their downtown location, on the day that I chose to visit they were mobile outside of the downtown core in Railtown. These aren’t any ordinary tacos by any means they are soft corn tacos in a Bulgogi style using high quality free range meats that are marinated and braised before being barbecued. I had the Tacos ($10 for 4) on a plate that included 2 beef rib-eye & 2 pork topped with their delicious salsas. All the ingredients are sourced locally, made fresh, you can get 1 taco or more, I’d say go for more!

Chicken with Mole

Red Chicken Enchiladas

I had heard about this new Mexican spot in the West End and got in for lunch recently with my friend Noam. I was happy to found this neighborhood gem, inside it was bright and colourful and the service was very friendly. The focus is on traditional Mexican fare and you will find many of the specialties you have known about in this part of the world, from Tortilla Soup to Enchilladas, Fajitas, Tacos and Burritos. I had the delicious Chicken with Mole ($8.95) the tender shredded chicken was seasoned with their traditional Mole Poblano a sauce made with different types of chillis, chocolate and spices. Noam had the Red Chicken Enchiladas ($8.90) three soft tortillas stuffed with shredded chicken and covered with fresh tomato sauce, melted jack cheese and sour cream. Both of our dishes came with red rice, refried beans and salsa. I had a bottle of the non alchohol Sangria ($2) beverage to drink. The food is fresh, tasty and the prices are terrific.

Mole Chicken

Vegetarian Burrito

I was in for dinner recently with friend Ariane as we were craving some good Mexican food. I love this authentic east side spot with their colourful interior, the night we were there they had a duo in musical performance. I have often done take-out, this time stayed to enjoy the music and the atmosphere. I had the Mole Chicken ($10.50) with pulled chicken, mexican rice, house stewed beans and 3 corn tortillas. Their mole boasts over 25 ingredients and 5 chiles to create a flavourful sauce. Ariane had the Vegetarian Burrito ($7) beans and cheese wrapped around a flour tortilla with a side of pico de gallo. The menu features a large selection of tacos, and taco variations along with breakfast specialties and Enchiladas too.

The BEST Taco List

Tacos have been gaining quite a following in Vancouver. I have been eating tacos at many of the Mexican restaurants in the city and here is my list of the Best Tacos in Vancouver.

#1 goes to La Taqueria 322 W. Hastings for the best authentic Mexican tacos in the city that are made from the freshest and locally sourced, free-range meats, sustainable fish and organic vegetables. My favourites are the chicken mole and crema corn.

#2 goes to La Hacienda 1075 Howe Street for the great fillings including crema corn, chicken and steak.

#3 goes to Bandidas Taqueria 2781 Commercial Drive for the best Vegetarian tacos and their roasted pineapple.

#4 goes to Don Guacamoles 1333 Robson Street for delicious steak tacos.

#5 goes to Dona Cata 5076 Victoria Drive for their tacos with a great selection of salsas to top it all off.

#6 goes to Lolita’s 1326 Davie Street for their halibut with mango salsa, and the chicken with salsa verde.

#7 goes to Cactus Club (multiple restaurants) for their fish tacos.
