Advice: Follow them on twitter for daily open hours and location. At this time there are 2 locations located in the same proximity, the 2nd location is at Dunsmiur & Howe.

Chicken Souvlaki

I love Georgia Kambolis’s fresh baked pita that was once only available in the restaurant on the waterfront, now you can get this delicious pita on the street. I was by for lunch the other day and had the delicious meal in itself Chicken Souvlaki ($6.50) with housemade pita, local onions and tomatoes. In addition to the souvlaki and greek salad you can also get the same pita on its own naked, or with dips or just plain ‘ol grilled!

I was curious as to why successful restaurateur Harry Kambolis would open carts on the street, so I asked him, Harry said because it takes him back to where it all began, by English Bay, at a Souvlaki Place, a take-out stand where he worked when he was a teenager.

RE-UP BBQ 2

Corner of Granville & Broadway

Twitter: @reupbbq

Advice: Open daily 11:30am – 6pm

It is the size of a hot dog cart that does not serve hot dogs, serving up a very simple menu that is tasty, filling and inexpensive.

BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich

The highlight here is the BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich ($6.75) that has been slow cooked in a very tasty sauce served with extra sauce on top of the slaw, meat inside a big good textured bun. This sandwich is the only one on the menu along with some drinks, keeping it simple is what works here.

NIMBY BURGER

2210 Cornwall Avenue, Vancouver

Tel: 604-734-3589

Twitter: @NimbyBurger

Advice: no seats, take-out only.

Hamburger (left) & Cheeseburger (right)

Fries

The space is small and the line is often long. You know the food is always good when there is a line-up, when I first heard of Nimby I didn’t understand the concept, after tasting my first Nimby burger I was in burger heaven. For the price these burgers hit the spot, they aren’t gourmet pile it on burgers like some places, these are basic flavorful burgers at a great price. This burger stand sells burgers, fries and milkshakes and that is it! I have had the Cheeseburgers ($3.99), Hamburger ($2.99), French Fries ($2.99) and Milkshakes ($3.25) the chocolate shake is my favourite. Each burger is topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle.

KEN’S CHINESE RESTAURANT

1097 Kingsway, Vancouver

Advice: Have a private room that holds 40, good idea to share some of the dishes.

Yin Yang

Lobster Hotpot

Stuffed Pink Scallop

Beef Tenderloin

This award winning restaurant has been on my list to check out for quite sometime, very happy that I finally trecked across town to visit. The server told me that I had to try the Yin Yang ($2.25) which I did, it was a hot beverage made of black tea and coffee and I suspect this popular HK style hot beverage is loaded with caffeine, with a little bit of sugar for sweetening it was a tasty hot drink. My friend and I began our meal here with award winning signature dish, the Lobster Hotpot ($18.80) in a very tasty sauce with ginger and green onion with taro noodles. The next award winning dish was the Stuffed Pink Scallop ($5) served on the half shell in a curry and cheese sauce. Since they serve both Cantonese style food along with Western Style I had to try one of the popular Western dishes and I enjoyed the huge Beef Tenderloin ($16.95) with black peppercorn sauce, broccoli and other vegetables.

Mung Bean & Sago Dessert Soup

They serve complementary dessert with all of their meals, these desserts change often, tonight we had a bowl of the hot Mung Bean & Sago Dessert Soup. The menu selection is vast, with 3 very different menus they offer a lot of different dishes and apparently all are popular with the varied mix of customers from lunch, thru late night. They were awarded Best Casual restaurant in the 2010 Chinese Restaurant Awards and I see why, come as you are and enjoy the homey atmosphere.

SAVARY ISLAND

1533 Marine Drive, West Vancouver

Tel: Tel: 604-926-4021

Web: n/a

Advice: Come hungry, if the place is full it is worth waiting for a seat.

Pies

They have one of the best Grilled Cheese Sandwiches in the city, moreover one of the best pies selections too. Anytime I find myself in the neighborhood, I’ve dropped by for a visit to admire the pies, have a coffee and read the paper. This bustling bakery/café is always full of people eating great sandwiches, sipping lattes or indulging in slices of pie. They bake their own breads, and several different types of pies daily.

Grilled Cheese

Lemon Buttermilk Berry Pie

On my last visit I had the Grilled Cheese ($9.50) on their Italian bread with cheese, tomatoes and onions, crispy and grilled to perfection. I also had a slice of their Lemon Buttermilk Berry Pie ($4.95). They have a good selection of other sandwiches that can be grilled or not, soups, salads and a whole range of baked goods including the most delicious pies. There at least 10 different types of pies made fresh daily, by the slice or by the pie. For an extra $1.50 you can add a scoop of ice cream to your pie. Have a latte or a cup of tea, find a seat, read a newspaper and enjoy.

MAPLE GRILL

Advice: closed Friday night and Saturday (they open after sundown on Saturday). Serving lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. Reservations are a good idea.

Ima's Hummus

Turkei Schnitzel

Pesto Chicken Breast

My friend Alejandro and I had dinner here recently, he often joins me when there is a new Mexican restaurant in the city, this time it was his first time to eat in a Kosher restaurant. I have eaten in many Kosher restaurants around the world and too often they aren’t focused on gourmet cuisine, at the Maple Grill I was pleasantly surprised. To begin our meal and our Kosher gourmet journey, we shared Ima’s Hummus ($6.50) – topped with chickpeas, toasted sesame seeds, olive oil and served with brown pita bread. For our main plate entrees, I had the deliciously large Turkei Schnitzel ($22) -breaded and pan seared, topped with pea shoots dressed in an herb vinaigrette with toasted pine nuts, accompanied by two sides, of the eight sides to choose I had the Roasted Rosemary Potatoes and the Grilled white asparagus and red pepper; Alejandro had the Pesto Chicken Breast ($23) – tender chicken stuffed with house-made basil pesto and for his two sides he had the Saffron Risotto and Roasted Rosemary Potatoes. The menu offers a good selection of Appetizers, Soups and Salads from some traditional favourites including Matzo Ball Soup to inventive salads such as The Black Hat Salad. Their are Casual Plates which are mostly burgers such as the Moroccan Burger and Ocean Burger where you can substitute the accompanying fries with onion rings, soup or side salad upon request. Then their are the Main Plates which offers a varied selection of entrees such as a 10 oz Rib-eye Steak for $32 which is the most expensive item on the menu. All the Main Plates come with your choice of two sides and you can ask for seconds or thirds of the tasty sides too.

Apple Strudel topped with Soy Ice Cream

We were both quite full after our dinner, however that wasn’t going to stop us in trying at least one of the desserts. We shared the Apple Strudel ($6.50) – round pastry filled with apples and cinnamon topped with a scoop of their home-made soy ice cream ($1 extra). The dessert was unbelievably good and after I found out who the pastry chef was, I was tempted to order another, next time I will have my own dessert!

This west coast Kosher kitchen is inventive and the dishes are flavourful. The decor is elegant with black walls and hard wood flooring, the seating is very comfortable. Our server was welcoming and offered guidance with the menu selection. The bar menu offers Kosher wines along with an extensive selection of beers on tap.
